The University of Rhode Island Transportation Center (URITC) was established by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation with authorization from the Transportation Equity Act of 1998 (TEA 21). In 2005, funding for the URITC was reauthorized under the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEALU).

The purpose of these grants is to develop and conduct a multidisciplinary program of transportation education, research and technology transfer. In recognition of the complexity of transportation problems and the breadth of topics within transportation and transportation-related fields, this year, the URITC plans to fund Learning Laboratories (see below description) consistent with the URITC theme: “Connectivity through Sustainable Transportation Systems.”

The URITC Theme: Connectivity refers to the facilitation of a more efficient domestic and global transportation system that enables economic growth and development. Transportation is a critical element of efficient supply chains upon in our global economy. Connectivity is exemplified in the steady stream of research involving the intersection of passenger and freight transportation.
